 The Lead Tenant Program provides placement and support for adolescents, who have moved out of their family home due to court orders, and are getting ready to make the move to independent living.
Who does the program support?The Lead Tenant Program supports:> 16 to 18 year olds who have spent a period of time in Wesley's residential care homes > Young people who, after spending some time at Wesley, have shown some self care skills, and can live with minimal staff involvement > Young people coming out of residential care, to help with strengthening their independent living skills How does the program work?The Lead Tenant Program has three young people living in each house, alongside a 'lead tenant' who lives in the house and acts as a mentor for the young people. The lead tenant helps to provide a safe and caring environment for the young people.The program is funded by the Department of Human Services, and acts as a transitional program for the young people who are preparing themselves to live on their own. The program allows the young people to gain more experience in living alone, which more often than not, the young person has not done up until this point. The young people get referred into this program by their case manager and program worker, after they have shown signs of having the capacity to live independently. During the time at the Lead Tenant Program, the young people must be studying, employed or actively seeking employment.
