Learner Driver Mentor Program

The L2P Learner Driver Mentor program supports young people in out of home care who are struggling to access support methods to accumulate the 120 hours of supervised learner driver experience required to obtain their drivers license.

Since the introduction of the Graduated License System, learner drivers must accumulate 120 logged hours of driving practice before applying for a probationary license.  Research has shown that young drivers who achieve 120 hours of supervised driving experience, in a range of driving conditions, are less likely to be involved in serious motor vehicle accidents in the years following the attainment of their driver’s license.

 Who does the program support?

The L2P Learner Driver Mentor program is open to young persons aged 16-18 who reside in DHS care within the Eastern Metropolitan Region.

How does the program work?

Learner drivers receive four professional driving lessons with another three throughout their involvement before moving into supervised driving. When under supervision, learners will be collected by Wesley volunteer mentor drivers in cars provided by the L2P program where the learner will take over driving for the session.

Supervising Drivers ensure that learner drivers complete their log book correctly and gain experience in a range of driving conditions including night driving. Sessions will be scheduled to fit into the lives of both mentors and clients and will total 120 hours over the duration of the clients participation.

L2P funds all elements of instruction and supervision though not the cost of obtaining learners permit or sitting the license test.

Taking a learner all the way to ’P’ plates in L2P can turn a young persons life around, giving them life options and a sense of achievement they may never have experienced before.
