Wesley Disability Homeshare

Wesley Disability Homeshare is an innovative shared living arrangement where two people come together for mutual benefit.

The program matches householders, who are looking for companionship and some practical help around the home, with homesharers who are able to provide this assistance and contribute to household expenses in return for free accommodation.

What does Homesharing involve?

Who is the Householder?

  • The Householder is a person with a disability (physical, intellectual, neurological disability or sensory impairment.)
  • They must live in the southern region of Melbourne: Port Phillip, Glen Eira, Stonnington, Bayside or Kingston.
  • The accommodation provided is clean and safe
  • The Householder must have the capacity to share their own home with a homesharer.
  • The Householder may be a home owner, rent, or live with their primary carer in their home.

Who is the Homesharer?

  • The Homesharer is a reliable, honest and caring person who can provide company and assistance to the Householder in exchange for free accommodation.
  • Homeshare rs can be students or people who work full or part time.

What does Homesharing involve?

The practical help the Homesharer can provide may include assistance with some shopping, running some errands, cooking and sharing a couple of meals during the week, helping with pets or the garden or just watching TV together.

A major part of homeshare is having someone in the home at night; to know that someone is coming home in the evening provides a great sense of security not only to the householder but also family and friends.

Homeshare compliments supports that are often already in place for the Householder. If a Householder has support for personal care, or home help from the council these will still continue. The Homesharer does not provide personal care.

Wesley Homeshare has an extensive interview, assessment and introduction process, ensuring mature, responsible homesharers are successfully recruited and matched with the Householder.

Wesley Homeshare Disability Pilot Project has been operating for just over 2 years in the Southern Metropolitan region. It expands on the Wesley Homeshare model for older Householders that has been working successfully in the inner south eastern suburbs of Melbourne for the past 7 years.

The Disability project is funded by Department of Human Services Southern Metropolitan Region. We have made over 10 matches and currently have 6 matches in place.

Ricky and Charlie (above)
Ricky at front, Charlie & Annie (the cat) have just celebrated their first year of homesharing in Wesley Homeshare Disability Pilot project.

Ricky has been living in her own home for several years; she wanted someone in her home at night and some companionship. Charlie has just completed his hospitality course and now works full time.

Ricky and Charlie enjoy each others company especially with music and watching a bit of TV.
