Wesley Do Care

Wesley Do Care is a social support service for socially isolated, frail older people and adults with disabilities. The service:

• assists individuals to become involved with and remain in their community
• is available to people of any religion, race, ethnic or language group
• operates throughout metropolitan Melbourne
• offers a flexible respite service for carers
• relies on the generosity of volunteers who contribute their time to support others

Referrals

You can contact Wesley Do Care yourself. Friends, family members, service professionals, doctors and others may also refer people who are frail and isolated, or living with a disability.

Become a Volunteer

Volunteers spend regular time with one or more people. Involvement may be on a one-to-one or group basis. Activities include:

• conversation and companionship
• walks, local drives, visits to place of interest
• playing cards and board games
• gardening, golfing and fishing
• having a regular meal together

Volunteers are aged 18+ and contribute their time and energy to support others.

• all prospective volunteers participate in an orientation program
• some contribute an hour or two a week, others have more time available
• volunteers receive ongoing support, supervision and skill development

A Perfect Match

Every week, Shifa provides much-valued company to Loretta, who has restricted mobility. The pair were matched a year ago after Shifa responded to a call to support socially isolated older people in her community. Shifa has opened up a whole new world for Loretta, who says they clicked instantly and will never run out of things to talk about. Loretta has become like family to Shifa, who always comes home happy from her visits and gets enormous satisfaction from the contribution she is making to her community.

Telelink

Telelink enables groups of up to 10 socially isolated people to talk together on a weekly basis – on the telephone – from the comfort of their own homes.

Wesley Pet Pals

Wesley Pet Pals matches friendly dogs and their owners with older people or adults with a disability who would enjoy a visit from someone with a friendly pet.

The client, pet owner and dog are all assessed for their suitability and mutual needs are taken into consideration when matches are made.

Wesley Take Time

Wesley Take Time provides an opportunity for people caring for older people living at home to ‘take time’ for themselves.

Wesley Take Time uses trained volunteers to provide either 1:1 companionship or community activities/outings for carers, or the person they care for.

A carer is a person, such as a family member, friend or neighbour who provides unpaid, regular and sustained care and assistance to another person.

Caring can often be a rewarding experience, however, caring for a relative or friend can also be very stressful and exhausting.

The Wesley Take Time program is a free service, however there may be a small cost involved to cover an outing/activity.
