Case Study - Wesley College student visits

Small groups of year 9 students from Wesley College (www.wesleycollege.net) have been visiting the Mission for a number of years as part of their 'City Curriculum Project' (CCP). CCP provides a city experience for students, one of the aims being to "enhance social awareness through action, reflection and response". Students visit a number of different organisations and locations throughout the CBD over a two week period and prepare a presentation and report based on an issue of their choice.

The Wesley Mission Melbourne presentation for Wesley College students has been developed in line with the aims of the CCP.

Students are given an overview of the different programs of the Mission, a brief history of the Mission (including site tour), and the main presentation focuses on the issues of homelessness in the CBD and the work of Wesley Homelessness Services in meeting the needs of clients.

"Thank you very much for your time and information on the Wesley Mission. From the information you've given us we'll be able to write up a report displaying the view for the future, present and past of homelessness in Victoria." (Wesley College student)

In-Kind (Product) Support
Many Wesley programs rely on goods in-kind so that they can continue their important work. For example, non-perishable food, toiletries, travel and phone cards, blankets (new or dry cleaned) and other household necessities are always appreciated by Wesley Homelessness Services.

Case study - Our Lady of Sion College hygiene packs
Year 10 students from Our Lady of Sion College put together 'hygiene packs' for the Wesley Support Service [link to program] in the CBD. Packs included soap, samples of shampoo and conditioners, feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes and toothpaste and tissues. Students did this as part of an activity day with a theme of Social Justice. The day aimed to expose students to a variety of ways that they could make a difference within the wider community, by assisting other Christian organisations in helping those less fortunate than themselves.

Fundraising events
Many school groups raise money for charities by organising fundraising events such as a free dress day. Raising funds to support a Wesely program can raise awareness among students of the needs of others within the community, while helping us to continue providing services and support to those in need.

Leader Food for Families Appeal

Did you know?
Wesley Mission Melbourne was established in Lonsdale Street as Melbourne Central Mission in 1893. At the time, the area was known as the 'black slums' of the city and was notorious for opium dens gambling houses and places of ill-repute.
