Frail older people and people with disabilities who choose to live independently can become socially isolated within their community.
Through Wesley Do Care, we have been supporting socially isolated, frail older people and adults with disabilities for over 30 years. We recruit, train and support volunteers to regularly visit older people and people with disabilities, establishing continuing relationships based on mutual trust and respect. Wesley can provide assistance that links people into community activities of their choice.
The Wesley Melba Program offers social support programs in the Yarra Valley to our older residents, people with disabilities and carers. A range of activities including volunteer friendly visits, Men’s Shed, Listen to Older Voices radio program and small day group activities, all designed to create opportunities to engage and connect with the local and wider community. The Melba Program is committed to positive ageing, supporting older people to maintain an autonomous life style, valuing and acknowledging the contribution older people have made and can continue to make.
Wesley Do Care was recently featured in two radio adverts:

Who does the program support?
> Older people and people with disabilities who feel isolated > Volunteers who wish to contribute their time and skills to support others through companionship with an older person or person with a disability
How does the program work?
Wesley Do Care responds to social isolation and assists people to become involved and remain in their community. Volunteers spend regular time with one or more people which may be on a one-to-one or group basis. Activities include:
> Conversation and companionship > Walks, local drives, visits to place of interest > Playing cards and board games > Gardening, golfing and fishing > Having a regular meal together
We provide ongoing support to all participants. Volunteers receive ongoing support and education as well as skills development and enhancement.
We work with each participant to meet their individual needs. Participants can choose one-to-one visits, and a variety of special interest groups that offer intellectual stimulation and social and cultural activities. Some other initiatives include:
> Wesley Pet Pals: a free service that matches dogs and their owners with older people or adults with a disability who would enjoy a visit from someone with a friendly pet. Download the Wesley Pet Pals flyer here. > Wesley Telelink: Weekly groups of up to ten socially isolated people who talk on the telephone from the comfort of their own homes. Groups can be formed for people who speak languages other than English
The Wesley Melba Program in the Yarra Valley specialises in connecting older people, people with disabilities and carers to their community and overcoming social isolation. Our friendly visit program matches trained volunteers to an older person for regular contact, conversation and companionship.
The Melba Program creates opportunities for older people, people with disabilities and carers to engage and connect by: > Joining our friendly visit program – across the Yarra Valley @ a time to suit you > The Men’s Group – every second Thursday in Healesville > The Men’s Shed – Wednesdays in Warburton > Pleasant Wednesday Afternoon Tea – Weekly in Healesville > Our Social Club - every Tuesday Warburton > Telelink – weekly on Thursday morning > Listen to Older Voices – our award wining weekly radio program – broadcasts stories from the life & times of older people, issues, information and entertainment.
